Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine
Acupuncture is part of an ancient and sophisticated form of medical treatment which originated in China but which has increasingly spread throughout the world. This system of medicine is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (often abbreviated to TCM). Traditional Chinese Medicine has been practised for thousands of years in China and the far East, but has only become widely available in Europe relatively recently, in the last thirty years. Acupuncture is one of the many forms of medical treatment which are used by practitioners of TCM.
Traditional Chinese Medicine, through the use of acupuncture and other classical medical therapies, aims to establish energetic harmony in the whole person and thereby not only treat illness but also promote active health and vitality and thereby increase resistance to disease. From its very ancient origins such medicine has been at once both preventative and curative, the ideal being to so strengthen the person's overall health and well-being that they do not get sick in the first place, or if they do fall ill to speed their recovery.
One of the most outstanding features of TCM is that it can tailor the treatment to fit the complaint. It is also compatible with other systems of medicine, such as Western medicine.
