Welcome to Jingshen

Jing: "Refined, essence, perfect, fine, energy, exquisite; The fundamental substance which maintains the functioning of the body; Essence of life."

Shen: "Divine, miraculous, spirit, mind, expression, smart."

A Chinese - English Dictionary, Beijing University Press.

In Chinese medical terms, Jing Shen is the state of optimal health, where the human mind, body and spirit are balanced, adequately nourished and functioning smoothly as one integrated whole. This state of health is ultimately the aim of all Chinese medical treatment, over and above merely ridding symptoms brought on by disease and illness.

Jing is the most fundamental generative and reconstructive substance of life. It is the genetic blueprint that determines the individual's constitution.

Shen is the human spirit, the mind, the more 'spiritual' component of the human person. It is the awareness and consciousness that directs the person.

Qi is the life force or vital power, the most basic component of living matter. It is the most actively vitalising component that produces and maintains life in human beings. Qi is what acupuncture and TCM works on.

Jing, Qi and Shen are what is called the San Bao, the Three Treasures, so called because they are regarded as the very basis of the human being. When all three are well, the person is well. If any of the three are lacking, the person will be unwell.

"Jing Shen is the idea of good mind and consciousness, of good interaction of body, mind and spirit, of vigour and vitality and of drive. It is supreme healthiness"

Professor T.J. Shanahan, Irish College of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

"What life comes from is called Jing. Jing is what the first life impulse comes from. That which precedes the coming into existence of human personality (Shen) is called Jing."

"Whoever has Shen, flourishes. Whoever loses Shen, perishes."

Huang Di Nei Jing : Ling Shu ca.200BC
